Nordestinos Carnival Arts
A Powerful Fusion of North East England and North East Brazil
Nordestinos is a vibrant, collaborative project that brings together young people, adults, and professional artists to create something truly unique: a Samba Reggae Bloco that fuses the rhythms and traditions of Brazil’s north east with the folk music and dance heritage of North East England.
Developed in partnership with professional musicians and dancers alongside members of Runaway Samba, Baque de Ogum, and Gateshead’s DrumDin, the project is rooted in cultural exchange, creativity, and community spirit.
A key creative partner in the project is Oi Musica, who bring powerful brass and horn arrangements to the bloco, adding a bold new dimension to our sound. This rich musical blend now features over 60 drummers, dancers, brass players, and puppeteers, delivering electrifying, high energy performances for audiences across the North.
The Nordestinos Bloco is now performed annually at Durham Miners Gala, celebrating unity, heritage, and joy in one of the region’s most significant cultural gatherings.
