Marcia’s Story

Marcia Hidson: A Journey of Growth and Self-Discovery Through Music

Over the past two years, Marcia has experienced significant personal and professional growth, with her musical journey at Jack Drum Arts playing a role in her development.

Joining the Rock Band

“I really feel at home on the bass, there are a lot of things to explore and that you can do that aren’t possible on other instruments”

Marcia, an accomplished musician before joining, became involved with Jack Drum Arts’ Collective Music Making sessions in late 2022. Though initially apprehensive, the opportunity to collaborate with other musicians and engage in creative projects was hugely relevant to Marcia’s interests, reinforcing her passion for live music and performance-particularly on bass.

Navigating Life and Music

Marcia, who recently completed her music degree, is now navigating the waters of a burgeoning professional music career, seeking out opportunities for gigging, recording, and teaching nearby and further afield. On a personal level, Marcia is learning to embrace life’s uncertainties and to find peace amid the chaos.

Personal Growth Through Music

“It’s just a really great feeling to be playing music with other people, who are, like, really non-judgmental and accepting”

Marcia has gained confidence musically and personally throughout her time attending the Collective Music Making, allowing her to experiment more freely musically, and engage openly with others. Despite the challenges, Marcia values the learning process of playing an instrument, and embraces the challenges surrounding new ways of looking at music and applying music theory. Highlights of Marcia’s involvement with the Rock Band Sessions include performing at events like BOPFEST and Bishop Auckland Town Hall with ‘Jazzy Dystopia,’ and receiving an invitation to perform in London from musician Megan Black as part of her touring band. These experiences have reinforced Marcia’s sense of accomplishment and professional value.

Exploring Gender Identity and Transition

“It’s like moving from a black-and-white, muted existence to a more colourful and vibrant one rich with feeling and expression”
