Community Climate Culture

Through the #iwill programme Jack Drum Arts supported and empowered young people ages 10-20 years to make a positive difference in their community and share their concerns about Climate Change using arts and culture as their tool.

Community, Climate, Culture engaged young people in social action and activism using arts and culture to raise awareness of climate change in their community through volunteering and campaigning.  We supported 35+ young people ages 12-20 years (up to 25 for those with a disability) to engage in sustained, meaningful volunteering through the delivery of arts based social action projects.  Delivered over a 12-month period we created opportunities for cooperation, dialogue, advocacy and action that address the shared challenges of climate change in a post-covid world, culminating in a family friendly ‘green’ festival in summer 2022 planned and produced by young people from County Durham.

Throughout the project young people were encouraged to design sustainable arts projects that celebrated the environment, inspiring action on climate change behind the scenes and in the encounters members of the community have with their work. Using the hierarchy of environmental action: Avoid, Reduce, Reuse, Replace, due consideration was given to use of materials, travel, energy use and food waste- particularly when planning their festival.
